How to use the upper-arm blood collection device

Step-by-step instructions for using the upper-arm device to collect a blood sample.

The upper-arm blood collection device included in your kit collects a blood sample from your upper arm instead of a finger prick. You warm the area, attach the device to your arm, press the button to activate it, and let the tube fill before sealing it for return. This article walks you through every step.

Important: Register your kit before you collect. The lab cannot process an unregistered sample.

Before you start

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Set out all kit contents on a clean surface.

  2. Drink one to two glasses of water (8–16 oz) about 30–60 minutes before you collect. Hydration improves blood flow.

  3. Check that the tube is tightly attached to the device before you do anything else.

  4. If your kit includes a heat pack, use it on the collection spot on your upper arm for the full 3–4 minutes to warm the area and increase blood flow. Rubbing the heat pack also helps.

Note: If your upper arm is very hairy, shave the collection spot before you begin. The device must form a firm seal against skin to create the vacuum that draws blood out. Hair prevents a good seal.

Placing and activating the device

  1. Choose a spot on your upper arm approximately 2–3 finger-widths below the top of your shoulder, centered on top of the arm muscle (called the deltoid).

  2. Clean the spot thoroughly with the alcohol rub included in your kit. This removes oils and lotions that can block the adhesive. Let the skin dry completely.

  3. Do not press the red button before the device is on your arm.

  4. Stick the device to your arm and press firmly all the way around the button area to make sure it is fully attached and sealed.

  5. Press the button firmly for about 1 second, then release. The vacuum that draws blood into the tube activates when you release the button — not when you press it.

  6. Leave the device on your arm even if you do not feel the lancet. It is normal to feel nothing or very little.

Important: Keep your arm hanging straight down at your side during the entire collection. Resting your arm on a table or armrest reduces blood flow to the site and can cause the blood to clot before the tube fills.

After collection

  1. Once the tube has filled, remove the device as directed in your kit.

  2. If your kit instructs you to mix the sample, first invert the tube and flick it a few times, then mix it gently. Do not shake it hard.

  3. Seal the tube and place it in the biohazard bag.

  4. Label with your name, date of birth, and collection date.

  5. Return your sample the same day, following your kit's mailing instructions.
